If I called you last night, I apologize. I was playing “overzealous frat boy,” excited by Virginia’s recent winning ways. Speaking of which, Emily and I are actually going to make the trip up to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, next weekend to see our beloved ‘Hoos play in person!

I’m an idiot

So, I sent my professor some discussion questions about the book we had to read for class tomorrow, only to find out that it wasn’t the book we had to read for class tomorrow. Apparently, I read a book that we won’t get to until mid-October, meaning that I have to read a 330 page book by 2:00 tomorrow. (It’s not going to happen.) On top of that, I have office hours, a lecture to attend, and 60 or so papers to grade.

Needless to say, tomorrow is going to suck.

When I Grow Up

On the first day of the classes this semester, I gave my sections the opportunity to ask questions about me. Anything they wanted to know, but the catch was, they had to answer the question themselves. I’ve used it with high schoolers before, and they generally eat it up, but I was a little apprehensive with college students, given that they are (at least in theory) more worldly.

Thankfully, I didn’t get any off-the-wall questions, but my favorite was from a young lady who politely asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I sort of chuckled, and was tempted to say, “Am I not grown up already?” But I didn’t. Instead, I said, “A teacher.”

Well, I took a career test today. It was about 90 questions and took about 10 minutes, and this is what it came up with. Pretty good, I must say. (After the first ten, I’ve included only the ones that I’m actually interested in.)

No Substitute for Victory

The title of the post has nothing to do with its content, but I’m reading a biography of Vince Lombardi right now, and apparently one of his favorite quotes was, “There is no substitute for victory.”

Anyway, school has started again. So far, my workload has been pretty light, because I’m really only taking one class. Technically, I’m taking three, but two of them are only worth one credit: a pass/fail “Teaching History” class for new TAs (more or less a joke), and an independent study for which I read the books over the summer. As soon as I write the paper for that (hopefully by the end of the month), I’ll officially be shed of that burden. So that leaves one four-credit readings course. The reading list looks pretty good, and the writing load is relatively light, but the professor strikes me as just a bizarre guy. We’ll see how it goes. In other news, I’m really enjoying my job as a TA. I suppose it means that I like teaching history, which is a good thing, considering that I’m planning a career as a history teacher. There are headaches, sure, but I like being in front of the class and trying to get people to think. I have lots of room for improvement, but I look forward to the challenge. That may change once grading time comes around.

Other goings on:

1) Virginia’s football team looked absolutely pathetic against Wyoming last weekend. It was embarassing to watch as we barely moved the ball and then simply refused to tackle. Unless there is a major turnaround soon, I will probably join the “Groh Must Go” bandwagon. It would be one thing if he were a friendly guy. But he’s not.

2) Emily and I spent the day Sunday in Birmingham, looking around for potential registry things. Believe it or not, we found some plates and such that we both agreed on, and we didn’t have to argue for hours. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find it online, and our first thought was that perhaps it was being discontinued. Emily called, and apparently this is not the case, but it looks as though we’ll have to go into the store to create the registry. You win some, you lose some.

3) We’re going to Atlanta this weekend to see a Braves game with my old college chums, Bobby and Megz, who are now attending grad school at Georgia Tech and Georgia, respectively. It’s an all-you-can-eat package: the $25 ticket includes unlimited hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn, and soda/bottled water. Pretty sweet. I’m looking forward to it.
